Texas Congressman Tries to Legalize Online Gambling at Federal Level
Texas Congressman, Joe Barton, introduced the Internet Poker Freedom Act in the House of Representatives in the past week, trying to pass online gambling legislation under a federal framework. Barton’s new bill would create a program for the licensing of online poker by federal states and all federally recognized Indian tribes within the USA.
Changes Needed Now More than Ever
Joe Barton re-introduced his proposal, entitled “The Internet Poker Freedom Act”, on Thursday, just after Lindsey Graham introduced his bill aiming to restore America’s Wire Act of 1961, which bans most forms of online gaming. Barton’s bill itself is a substantial 102 pages, covering everything from iPoker history to how the bill would be implemented, regulated, licensed, and enforced. In his speech, Barton called poker “an all-American game”, which he learned as a teen and continues to play by now. The politician also added that his bill “is needed now more than ever” and it would provide players proper protections, as well as safeguards for both problem gamblers and children.
A few months ago, Barton was planning another internet poker push on Capitol Hill, in spite of his past efforts were ineffective. Let us remember, it’s not the first time the politician seeks to legalize internet gambling. In 2025, Barton made similar efforts, which have got nowhere.
